Code of Conduct

DYBA Code of Conduct

 

I.  General

It is the policy of Duluth Youth Basketball Association (DYBA) to promote the development of strong character, a positive attitude and a sense of responsibility and good citizenship in youngsters. It is the purpose of DYBA to achieve this goal through fair play and good sportsmanship with adult leaders providing the example. It is strictly against the policy DYBA for any person, either as a participant, coach or spectator to engage in arguments, to use abusive language, to harass or make any threatening gestures towards referees, coaches, players or league officials or to exhibit any behavior not in concert with the general policy of this statement. Failure to abide by this policy will result in the removal from the park immediately as well as possible future suspensions for a time and duration to be determined by the DYBA Board. Any further incidents may result in permanent suspension from Duluth Youth Basketball Association. Any players, parents, or coaches caught fighting or found consuming any controlled substance including but not limited to any tobacco product, will be suspended from league play for an amount of time to be determined by the DYBA Board.

 

II.  Coaches

It is expected that all coaches will uphold the policy statement of DYBA and will not engage in arguments, use abusive language, harass officials/referees, or exhibit any behavior not in concert with the general intention of the DYBA policy statement. It will be the responsibility of the coach to provide a safe play situation for their players. Coaches will be responsible for conducting practices that are organized, instructional, fun, and challenging for all players. Coaches will be expected to encourage good sportsmanship by demonstrating positive support for all players, coaches, and officials at every game, practice or other youth sporting event.

Coaches are expected to treat players, parents and officials with respect. Coaches are expected to conduct themselves in manner that will be a positive role model for the players on their team. Should a coach be faced with the potential situation that might cause any type of confrontation, the coach is expected to avoid the situation and report the incident to the appropriate board member.

  • Should a coach be found in violation of the "Code of Conduct," the coach will be suspended for 1 game.
  • If there is a 2nd occurrence in which the “Code of Conduct” has been violated by the same coach within a 12 month period, the coach will be suspended for a 12-month period commencing upon the date of the second violation.

Any future suspensions, the coach will lose all coaching privileges indefinitely at Duluth Youth Basketball Association. The first “Code of Conduct” violation is non-reviewable by the DYBA board and non-appealable. The second offense is reviewable by the DYBA board and then presented to the Executive board for final approval.

II-A.  Coach Ejections


1. Any coach ejected from a game will serve a 1 game suspension in addition to being removed from the game in which he or she was ejected.

  • This first offense for an ejection cannot be appealed.

2. Any coach ejected from a game for a second time within the same season will receive a 5-game suspension and the DYBA board will review the potential for the coach lose all coaching privileges for a period of 1 year.

  • The second ejection within a 12-month period can be appealed. The appeal must be made in writing within 24 hours to the President and Commissioner of the DYBA Board.
  • If the coach fails to notify the Director and President of the DYBA Board with 36 hours, they lose their right to appeal the second ejection.
  • If a coach’s appeal is overturned, the coach will be allowed to return to the team immediately.

3. Should a coach receive a third ejection over any time frame while coaching at DYBA, they will immediately lose all future coaching privileges and will not be allowed to run for any future elected positions nor be eligible to be appointed to any future volunteer positions.

 ALL DECISIONS OF THE DYBA BOARD ARE FINAL!!!

  

III. Parents

 ZERO-TOLERANCE POLICY

It is expected that all parents will conduct themselves in an adult manner before, during, and after all DYBA practices and games. Parents will not engage in arguments, use abusive language, harass officials/referees, conduct in negative talk/gestures about youth participants, or exhibit any behavior not in concert with the general intention of the DYBA policy statement.

  •  Any parent ejected from a game will serve a 1 game suspension in addition to the game in which they were ejected.
    • This first offense for an ejection cannot be appealed.
  • Any parent ejected from a game for a second time within the same season will receive a 3-game suspension.
    • The second ejection can be appealed. The appeal must be made in writing within 24 hours to the Director and President of the DYBA Board.
    • Any appeal made by a parent must be addressed within 1 week of the date in which the parent filed the appeal.

In addition, if this parent is currently serving in an elected or appointed board position, he or she may be removed from that position based on the finding of the DYBA board, or in the case of an Executive Board Member, the Executive Board. If the respective board determines removal is warranted, he or she shall be removed from that board position for the remainder of the current year.

 ALL DECISIONS BY THE DYBA BOARD ARE FINAL!!!

All occurrences for an ejection are cumulative whether obtained as a parent or as a coach. If a coach or parent is under current suspension, they cannot run for any board positions, nor can they be appointed to any volunteer board positions.

All ejections are inclusive whether the occurrence happened at a park in which DYBA is the governing body or any other facility as long as the coach and/or parent is part of a participating DYBA sport team. Any person receiving more than 3 ejections during their course of membership with DYBA will cause this person to be expelled and lose their membership with DYBA.
